Tell Me More...
A delightful shrub, Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Little Joker’ is a petite variety of burgundy Physocarpus, perfect for the middle to front of a border as a feature plant or for growing in a large pot on your balcony or patio. The deep maroon foliage is a coppery-red colour when young and matures to an almost black shade of reddish-purple. Attractive buds and pretty white flowers appear in early summer, turning into shiny dark red berries later. Plant Physocarpus in moist soil which is well-drained and a neutral to acidic pH. Add some ericaceous compost to the planting hole or pot if you garden on alkaline soil. Prune longer stems back to the base in autumn or spring to promote a dense, bushy shape. Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Little Joker’ will reach a height of around 40cm, spreading to 30cm when fully grown and its elegant form and colour mean it combines well with other shrubs and herbaceous perennials.
