Winner of Best New Shrub at the 2022 Horticultural Trades Association National Plant Show, Physocarpus 'Magic Ball' is one of the most exciting introductions we have seen in some time. Physocarpus is a deciduous, shrubby member of the rose family, grown for its attractive foliage and dense clusters of flowers. The 'Magic Ball' version is causing a stir not only for its unusually compact size, but also the constantly changing colour of its foliage. At first the leaves emerge crimped and bright orange, smoothing out to hues of yellow and green, then later, rich reds and maroons. Dainty white, pollinator-friendly flowers are present from July to September. This undemanding shrub largely takes care of itself and requires little or no pruning. Its relatively small size makes it ideal for plugging a gap in a shrub border, providing structure amongst herbaceous planting, or growing in a large container. Its ever-changing tones ensure it remains interesting throughout the growing season and makes it an excellent choice for maximising a small space. 'Magic Ball' is happy in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, moist, well-draining, preferably acidic soil. It is as hardy as it gets, able to withstand temperatures of -20 C and beyond.
