Tell Me More...
Phoenix canariensis, also known as Canary date palm, produces long, rigid, plume-like, feathery fronds, evoking memories of warmer climes. As they grow from the central crown, spreading and arching, they add dramatic impact to your garden. Creamy yellow flowers are produced on mature plants from June to August followed by yellow fruits which are said to be edible but not very fleshy. Easy to grow, with the ability to live in a broad range of climates and soils, it is tolerant of neglect and after around 10 years, the iconic ‘pineapple shaped’ trunk will start to develop. Slow growing, in its native country a 20–50 year-old plant can reach an ultimate height of over 12m and spread 8m, however in the UK it rarely gets taller than 1.5-2m. Phoenix canariensis prefers to be situated in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Drought tolerant once established it is best planted in well-drained soil.
