Phlox subulata ‘Benita’, commonly known as moss phlox, is a hardy, low-growing perennial admired for its vibrant display of spring flowers. This mat-forming plant is native to North America and thrives in well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for rockeries, borders, or ground cover. ‘Benita’ is particularly cherished for its profusion of star-shaped blooms in striking shades of pinkish-purple, often with a darker centre. These flowers appear from late spring to early summer, creating a dense carpet of colour that attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies. The fine, needle-like evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, adding texture to gardens even after the blooms have faded. Popular in Japan, where colourful meadows of Phlox subulata has instigated the Fuji Shibazakua Festival, which is held each year between mid-April and early June, where visitors celebrate the sheer beauty. Ideal for sunny locations, Phlox subulata ‘Benita’ is amazingly versatile. Drought-tolerant once established, hardy and requiring minimal maintenance, it is perfect for both experienced and novice gardeners. Resistant to deer and rabbits, reaching a height of around 20cm, spreading to 50cm, it remains a reliable and eye-catching addition to any landscape.
