Phlox subulata ‘Bavaria’ has a common name of Moss Phlox because of the beautiful fine foliage. This Phlox is one of the most colourful spring groundcover plants as pretty white blooms with pink centres, cover the dense evergreen weed-suppressing leafy cushions. Known also as Creeping Phlox because of the low ground hugging habit, ‘Bavaria’ is the perfect plant to grow between paths and patios - at the front of a border, in a rock or gravel garden, or tumbling beautifully from a container. Popular in Japan, where colourful meadows of Phlox subulata has instigated the Fuji Shibazakua Festival, held each year between mid-April and early June, where visitors celebrate the sheer beauty of this plant. Phlox subulata are deer resistant, drought tolerant, attractive to butterflies and happy in sandy soils, perfect for planting in coastal conditions. Growing to a height of 15cm and spreading to 50cm, Phlox subulata ‘Bavaria’ is not fussy on soil conditions in either sun or partial shade. With an RHS hardiness rating of H6, ‘Bavaria’ will thrive outside all year round with no winter protection required.
