Tell Me More...
Penstemon 'Vesuvius' produces spires of purple-blue, trumpet-shaped blooms above a bed of rich green, evergreen foliage from May to October. Clear white centres can be seen as the eye-catching flowers nod in the breeze.Penstemon, commonly known as 'Beard-tongues', are some of the most versatile, valued, and floriferous perennials you can grow in your garden. Great for cutting, they are also adored by bees, butterflies, and pollinators. Penstemon prefer to grow in moist, moderately fertile, well-drained soil in sun or part shade in any aspect. Drought tolerant once established. Mulch the base of plants in autumn to give extra winter protection in colder areas. Prune stems of spent blooms regularly to encourage more flowers. Leave the semi-evergreen foliage on plants over winter to protect new shoots which emerge early in the season. With a height of 40-60cm and spreading 30-50cm, Penstemon 'Vesuvius' is part of the 'Volcano' series of Penstemons - frost hardy (H4) perennial plants which can be grown outside all year round.
