Purple-tinged wiry stems, hold large bell-shaped blooms high above semi-evergreen bright green foliage all summer, and well into the autumn. Flowering for 6 months each year and often longer, Penstemon 'Rich Ruby' has been given the Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden.Once established penstemon are easy to grow, happy in either borders or containers, not fussy on soil conditions and happy in sun or part shade, oblivious to both drought and rain, resistant to slugs and snails, and loved by our friendly pollinators who will come visiting for a feast.Native to North America and East Asia, Penstemon are also known commonly as Beardtongue because the protruding pollen-free stamen resembles a bearded iris. One of the most valuable plants for late summer and autumn colour, thriving in most soil conditions they are very easy to propagate and raise new plants.Penstemon Rich Ruby will reach a mature height of around 90cm, spreading to around 60cm. Given an RHS hardiness rating of H3, which is down to around -5, some protection of a sheltered spot in your garden would be appreciated.
