Tell Me More...
Wiry wine-red stems bear a bounty of bright red, trumpet-shaped blooms from late May to November, often longer. Penstemon are so easy to grow, a mainstay of the summer and autumn garden, and one of the longest blooming perennials. Incredibly hard working, Penstemon are oblivious to drought or rain and positively thrive in most soil conditions, in containers or borders, sun or partial shade, and they propagate so easily. You will not need to battle against slugs and snails either, as Penstemon are not eaten by any garden pests, but are much loved by bees. Also known previously as Schoenholzeri, Penstemon ‘Firebird’ has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS for outstanding performance in the garden. Penstemon ‘Firebird’ is a hardy perennial given an RHS hardiness rating of H4, so some protection over winter may be needed if temperatures go below -10° C. It will reach a mature height of approximately 60-90cm, spreading to between 45-60cm.
