Tell Me More...
A compact beauty with all the finesse of her larger, taller cousins, Pennisetum advena Chelsea boasts striking foliage and is perfect for the front or middle of borders, or as an impressive specimen plant in a container on your patio. Plumes of colour are created by dense, richly coloured thin leaves, emerging in shades of deep red, then becoming darker as they mature throughout the year. Pennisetum are a versatile family of plants, happy in either borders or containers and require very little care. Spectacular when grown as specimen plants, the fluffy, bottlebrush-like spikelets are superb planted in sensory gardens and are excellent for both fresh and dried flower arrangements. Reaching a height and spread of 30-45cm, Pennisetum advena Chelsea prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Not hardy, she would appreciate some protection during winter, as temperatures dip towards and below freezing, then she will sprout again in the spring.
