Dramatic, broad leaves emerge from Pennisetum glaucum ‘Purple Baron’, green at first before quickly maturing to deep, burgundy purple. From July to September, these are crowned with large, thick, almost bottlebrush-like, dark purple flower spikes. A bold, striking plant which is useful in summer planting schemes (particularly those with a hot colour theme) where it can provide a dark foliage backdrop and vertical accents with its flowers. Alternatively, ‘Purple Baron’ makes a focal point in container displays and flowers are useful both in fresh and dried arrangements. Seeds are highly attractive to birds and plants are heat and drought resistant once they are established. Pennisetum glaucum ‘Purple Baron’ prefers light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil of any kind except clay. Position in full sun with any aspect other than north facing. A half-hardy perennial which is able to withstand temperatures down to -5°C without additional protection. In milder winters it should overwinter outdoors, otherwise treat as an annual, or bring container grown plants indoors for winter protection. Grows to a height of 90cm with a spread of 1m.
