One of the most spectacular trees for all-season interest, it is no wonder Parrotia persica Vanessa has been awarded an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society. Also known as the Persian Ironwood, Parrotia persica Vanessa bears an abundance of tiny scarlet flowers in late winter and early spring from its bare branches. New foliage emerges soon after, ovate in shape and reminiscent of beech in shades of red and bronze before turning green for the summer months. The best performance is saved for autumn however, when this gorgeous tree puts on a dazzling show in shades of orange, copper, crimson, and gold.Once the leaves have fallen to the ground, the flaky grey bark and arching, graceful branches of this Ironwood add interest and shape to the winter landscape.Plant this striking tree in full sun if possible, where its dramatic foliage will burn brightest and it will reach a maximum of 8m to 12m in height, and a spread of 2.5 to 4m in 20-50 years.
