Bridging the gap between spring and summer with their huge, sumptuous flowers, oriental poppies like 'Victoria Louise' are many gardeners' secret weapon when it comes to successional planting. From mounds of silvery, thistle-like leaves arise strong stems bearing bowl-shaped, apricot pink flowers, their crepe paper-like petals each blotched plum purple at the base. Measuring up to 25cm across these bold, eye-catching blooms exude an unapologetic sense of decadence. We love seeing them woven through a mixed border, deflecting the eye away from the withered foliage of spring bulbs, and serving as the warm-up act for the imminent explosion of midsummer colour. Left on the plant flowers give way to attractive seedheads, extending their interest well into autumn. For best results plant in deep, fertile, well-draining soil in full sun, though very light shade will be tolerated. Shelter from strong winds and provide staked support if necessary. Elegant yet tough, this herbaceous perennial is as hardy as they come, able to withstand temperatures down to -20 C and beyond. H: 90cm S: 1m.
