Papaver orientale, commonly known as the Oriental Poppy, is a striking perennial renowned for its bold, papery blooms. Native to the Caucasus, northeastern Turkey, and northern Iran, this eye-catching plant produces large, crinkled flowers in vibrant shades of red to orange, often with a dramatic dark centre. Blooming in late spring to early summer, Papaver orientale adds a burst of colour to garden borders and meadow plantings. Growing up to 90 cm tall, the attractive clumps of deeply lobed, hairy foliage dies back in summer after flowering, re-emerging in the autumn or spring. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing excellent drought tolerance once established. Oriental poppies are ideal for pollinator-friendly gardens, attracting bees and butterflies. Their striking flowers also make excellent cut blooms, though their delicate petals have a short vase life. With their bold presence and low-maintenance nature, these perennials bring a touch of drama and elegance to any landscape.
