Certain to steal the show, and reminiscent of the famous ruffled skirts, Papaver orientale ‘Flamenco’ displays strength, vitality, and passion. In May and June, luxurious, ruffled, true red petals surround a dark black throat, and trademark ‘pepper pot’ centre. As the foliage and petals fade, the seed head remains. Excellent cut for a vase, both fresh and dried, the stems make an exciting addition to floral arrangements.
Provides nectar and pollen for bees and many other types of pollinating insects, so perfect for a wildlife garden, though as a bonus deer, rabbit, and slugs tend to leave well alone.
Papaver orientale ‘Flamenco’ prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from a sheltered south or west facing aspect in full sun, although can tolerate some shade. A hardy herbaceous perennial to around - 15°C, and will reach a mature height of 80cm, spreading to 50cm.
