Tell Me More...
Native to the prairies of North America, Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' is named after the famous river valley and cultural region in West Virginia, USA. Also known as Switchgrass, this is a clump forming upright grass with fine foliage and delicate, feathery pink-red, purple flowers in September to October time which form a haze around the tall stems. Blooms are accompanied and followed by gorgeous autumn colour - where red tips meet dramatic shades of yellow and sway in the animated autumnal breezes.Valued for its upright growth habit and statuesque height of up to 1.2 metres, stems are ideal for cutting - either for fresh or dried arrangements. Leaves emerge in February and remain until November - we recommend that these are left over winter as a wildlife habitat and point of interest. They can then be cut back early in the year before the new stems emerge. Ideal for a dry garden, prairie planting or a wildlife border as well as a container on the patio or terrace. Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' prefers well-drained soil in full sun and is an AGM award winner for outstanding garden performance. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which will spread up to 1.2 metres.
