Tell Me More...
One of the most effective filler plants for tying a scheme together, the humble penstemon is a secret weapon of many a gardener and designer. This cheerful, semi-evergreen perennial will make itself at home in any well-drained spot, providing brightly coloured, nectar rich flower spikes from midsummer until the first frosts. Chosen for their harmonious colouring, the plants in this collection are: 'Apple Blossom'; white-throated pale pink flowers. H: 70cm S: 40cm. 'Plum Jerkum'; deep purple with white mottled throats. H: 70cm S: 40cm. 'Wedding Day'; pure white, blushed pink in bud. H: 80cm S: 40cm. Their hardiness teeters between 1 C and -10 C, ('Plum Jerkum' and 'Wedding Day' are slightly hardier than 'Apple Blossom'), meaning in all but mild microclimates it is advisable to provide some winter protection. This is best achieved with a dry mulch (such as bark chips) and delaying the cutting back of top growth until spring for added insulation.Penstemon will grow happily in full sun or partial shade, in an exposed or sheltered spot. Ensure the soil is well-draining, as they tend to be short-lived if sitting wet over winter.
