Lasting for months on end from June through to November, the showy, funnel-shaped flowers of Alstroemeria Majestic 'Avrill' are a dark peachy pink with striking yellow speckled throats. Though exotic-looking, alstroemeria are far hardier than they look and will thrive easily in most UK gardens. Their fleshy rhizomes form clumps which tend to gradually increase in size each year, producing masses of lush, lance-shaped foliage as well as a profusion of dazzling flowers. Alstoemeria are notable for their exceptionally long lifespan: we know of some lovely big clumps which have received little attention and are still going strong many decades on. As well as providing a splash of colour and flamboyance in a border, alstroemeria makes a superb cut flower with a vase life of two to three weeks. Pull rather than cut stems, as this produces 'a wound', which encourages further blooms and avoids damage to the crown. For best results grow Alstroemeria Majestic 'Avrill' in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Alstroemeria are also well-suited to growing in containers and this variety reaches a height of up to 90cm, spreading to 50cm. A hardy, herbaceous perennial.
