Origanum rotundifolium ‘Amethyst Falls’ is an incredibly showy and beautiful variety which, although often grown as an ornamental, can also be used in the kitchen to add its distinctive flavour to savoury, or sweet, dishes. Trailing stems are densely packed with pendulous clusters of hop-like, papery blooms in summer – offering intriguing form and colour in dry areas of the garden. Even better, the aromatic, semi-evergreen foliage releases a scent when disturbed so is perfect for containers near a patio or seating area as well as edging a pathway or filling a window box. Flowers are also much loved by our pollinating friends and stems, when cut for your home, make an intriguing fragrant addition to your floral arrangements, either when used fresh or dried. Origanum rotundifolium ‘Amethyst Falls’ prefers to be grown in well-drained soil of any kind. Locate in a spot with full sun or partial shade and your plant will mature to a height and spread of 50cm. A hardy (H4), semi-evergreen perennial which does not require any extra winter protection in most of the UK. However, dislikes excessive winter wet so take necessary precautions.
