Tell Me More...
One of the most popular apples worldwide, Malus 'Golden Delicious' is an easy, reliable variety suitable for both eating and cooking. Its fruit has greenish, yellow skin which matures to golden with light russet patches. Fruits are fresh, crisp, and juicy when first ripe, becoming honeyed and sweet if left on the tree for longer. The fruit of 'Golden Delicious' is noted for its ability to hold its shape when cooked, and is said to be the most commonly used apple for pastries in France. Its harvesting period starts around late October, with fruit lasting for up to eight months if stored in cool, dry conditions. Partially self-fertile, 'Golden Delicious' will crop when grown alone though the yield is likely to be greater with a pollination partner nearby. 'Braeburn' or 'Gala' are both compatible, or any other apple listed as 'Pollination Group 4'.For best results grow in moist, well-draining, moderately fertile, neutral soil in a sheltered, sunny spot (although partial shade will be tolerated). Malus 'Golden Delicious' is grown on a very dwarfing rootstock (P22) and will not exceed 2m in height and spread. It is hardy to -20 C.
