Beautiful cup-shaped flowers sit atop smooth green foliage, turning star-shaped as they matureThe only waterlily native to Britain, Nymphaea alba can be found in large pools, ditches, and slow-moving rivers. Rounded, dark green leaves with reddish undersides float on the surface of the water, joined from June until August by large, showy, faintly fragrant white flowers with yellow centres. This aquatic perennial has a vigorous, spreading habit, capable of producing foliage at a prolific rate. In anything other than very large bodies of water, we therefore recommend using an aquatic planting basket to contain growth. As well as making an attractive addition to a water feature, the shade provided by leaves is useful in reducing algae growth. Wildlife will also benefit, with flowers providing an early source of nectar, and leaves offering shelter to amphibians. Prefers undisturbed water in full sun. H&S: 15cm x indefinite. Hardy, aquatic perennial.
