Tell Me More...
A deep marginal plant, Menyanthes trifoliata will happily spread across a pond or any watery spot, as long as the water surface is no more than 15-60cm above the rhizome.Known as Bogbean or Buckbean, the names certainly do not do justice to the beauty, we prefer their other name the Water Shamrock.Beautiful intricate white and pink dainty frilled flowers are much loved by wildlife, a favourite of pollinators especially the bumblebees. Held on upright stems from April to June above glossy, green foliage which float just above the surface of the water. This fully hardy aquatic deciduous perennial is a native to the UK. Happy to grow in baskets best submerged to 25cm or planted in boggy soil, in any aspect except north facing. Growing up to 30cm tall with a spread of 1.5m and happy in sun or partial shade, full sun preferred to encourage flowering. Menyanthes trifoliata has been given an RHS hardiness rating of H7, so should not require any winter protection
