Melittis 'Royal Velvet Distinction' is an easy to grow, clump-forming beauty with robust upright stems baring distinctive oval, honey-scented, fuzzy leaves and flowers. Clusters of buds begin to form in late spring, full of promise, which open in summer to display beautiful, unique, orchid-like flowers. Each flower has exquisite contrasting colours - white upper lip and wine-red lower lip; only upon closer inspection are the intriguing two- toned blooms appreciated. As a member of the mint family, the foliage is very aromatic. The nectar rich blooms are attractive to bees and butterflies. Melittis 'Royal Velvet Distinction' is a perfect specimen to plant in the front of borders and in containers in well-drained soil. Preferring to be grown in part shade, Melittis makes a wonderful weed-suppressing groundcover in shady areas, where it will reach an approximate height 45cm and spread of 50cm.
