Intense, blue beautyNotable for statuesque height and large blooms, Meconopsis betonicifolia 'China Blue' is a rare and unusual member of the poppy family. A tricky reputation can often deter gardeners from growing meconopsis, yet given the right conditions, a flourishing group of these true-blue flowers readily occurs. 'China Blue' forms loose rosettes of bluish-green, toothed leaves covered in tiny, rust-coloured hairs. From May to July, equally fuzzy stems bear large, silky, saucer-shaped, blue flowers with yellow stamens. Meconopsis grow best where summers remain cool and damp, such as a moist, woodland garden. Seen thriving and en masse there can be few better plants. Prefers humus-rich, moist, well-drained (enough to avoid waterlogging in winter), neutral to acid soil in partial shade. Shelter from wind is required. H&S: 1.2m x 60cm. Hardy, short-lived perennial. Lifespan can be lengthened by providing consistently moist conditions, preventing flowering until several crowns have formed, and removing flowers before seedheads develop.
