Meconopsis baileyi is highly prized for the magical beauty of the large, silky, bright blue, tissue-paper-like blooms which rise high atop strong, wiry stems above rosettes of hairy foliage in summer. Meconopsis are widely known as the 'Himalayan Blue Poppy', and the name Meconopsis means 'looking like a poppy'. This is true of the blooms, but the seedpods are not the typical 'pepper pot' shape, they are actually long and thin.Shining out from your shady borders in late spring and early summer, rabbits and slugs tend to leave the bristly, green foliage well alone. Native to the mountains of China and the Himalayas, Meconopsis grow most any place including rock gardens, preferring moist, well-drained soil in part shade.Given the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the RHS for outstanding performance in the garden, this herbaceous perennial is hardy to -15 C - reaching a height of up to 1.2m and spreading 30-60cm each summer.
