Rich, jewel-like tonesUsing different types to take over from one another, it is possible to have a seamless, successional display of tulips from late March right up until the beginning of June. Especially selected to fit a purple colour scheme, the tulips in this trio span the mid to late part of this period. First to flower will be Tulipa 'Purisimma', its luminous, creamy white blooms appearing from March until April. As these begin to wane, in come Tulipa 'Queen of the Night' and Tulipa 'Atlantis', flowering from April to May. The former is a dramatic, near-black maroon, and one of the darkest flowers there is. The latter is a luscious amethyst colour with creamy gold edges. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil in full sun. You can try leaving 'Queen of the Night' and 'Atlantis' in the ground, while 'Purissima' will rebloom best given a dry, summer dormancy. To achieve this, lift and store bulbs once the foliage has died back, and replant in late autumn. All are hardy to between -15 C and -20 C.
