Tell Me More...
Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' is an outstanding magnolia with a beautiful, rounded shape. A robust, adaptable magnolia which produces attractive lilac-pink and cream flowers and a sweet, slightly fruity scent reaching a height and spread of 8m over 20-30 years. Ever since Pierre Magnol brought his namesake plant to Europe in the seventeenth century, there has been a consistent breeding programme to improve and create new magnolia varieties. This variety is a welcome addition to any garden and a must have for the lover of magnolias with blooms appearing on bare stems in April and the foliage follows through to October each year. Magnolia x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding performance too.Magnolias grow best in fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. A hardy shrub or tree which can be lightly pruned in midsummer as required.
