Tell Me More...
Lythrum can be annuals or herbaceous perennials as they are hardy to -20°c in the right conditions. You may know Blush’s wildflower cousin, purple loosestrife. The genus is best suited to moist, rich soil in areas such as a bog garden or pond edge with a southerly or westerly aspect. It will also grow happily in other areas of the garden if kept well-watered. This Lythrum variety is more pale pink than purple so the common name is deceptive. Tall, 80-100cm spears of delicate flowers are carried from mid-Summer through to early Autumn and are irresistible to bees and butterflies and have an abundance of nectar and pollen. The plant spreads up to 60cm and clumps should be divided in Spring or mid-Autumn every 3-5 years to overcome congestion. Lythrum salicaria Blush will self-seed readily so deadhead the plants if you want to limit this trait and keep your plants looking pristine.
