A bright, fun plant, Lotus cornilatus is certain to make you smile.
A member of the pea family. Nectar-rich, pea-like blooms in the brightest yellow colour, open from red-tinged buds from May to September.
Excellent for naturalising, it makes wonderful weed-suppressing groundcover. Found growing naturally in grassy areas, on roadsides or meadows where the bees and other pollinators will enjoy the sweet nectar.
Known by the common name, ‘Bird’s Foot Trefoil’, which relates to the seed pods which are said to look like a bird’s foot, and trefoil because the leaf is divided into 3 sections. Also called ‘Eggs and Bacon plant’ and ‘Hen and Chickens’, because of the yellowness of the flower and the red buds.
Lotus cornilatus prefers to be grown in a sunny spot, in poor, well-drained soil, attaining a mature height of around 20-40cm, and spreading of 50cm. The RHS have given this perennial a hardiness rating of H7, so no winter protection is required. It will die back naturally over the colder months to resprout again in the spring.
