A statuesque deciduous specimen tree grown for its phenomenal colour changing foliage and producing a gum which resembles liquid amber, hence the name. Originating from Eastern America and introduced to the UK in the 17th century this cultivar grows up to 30m tall over 10-20 years, it boasts large glossy light green foliage in spring and darkens to deep green in the summer, turning in autumn to a blaze of colour with red, orange, yellow and purple leaves dancing across the branches. Small inconspicuous flowers appear in spring to excite the pollinators, and these are followed by small round fruits which the birds appreciate too. It prefers lime-free, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade in any aspect. Hardy down to -20 c, extremely low maintenance, with needing little or no pruning (RHS Pruning Group 1). Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or early autumn.
