If there is a more elegant flower than the lily-flowered tulip, we are yet to find it! The long, slender blooms have pointed, reflexed petals, giving them a chic, hourglass-like silhouette. Their late spring blooming period follows on perfectly from early and mid-flowering tulips, allowing you to extend your display right up until the beginning of June. Tulipa 'Purple Heart' is simply stunning, with its deep, velvety claret flowers, height 30-50cm. Tulipa 'Ballerina' AGM blazes bright, its orange flowers flamed with red, height 40-60cm. Tulipa 'Elegant Lady' could not be more aptly named, with pale, creamy yellow blooms delicately flushed with soft lilac, height 40-60cm.Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot (the slender stems of this type of tulip can be vulnerable to wind damage), in fertile, well-draining soil. Lily-flowered tulips will rebloom best given a dry, summer dormancy, which can be achieved by lifting and storing bulbs once the foliage has died back, then replanting them in late autumn. All are hardy to between -15 C and -20 C.
