Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ is an eponymous, fragrant evergreen which produces beautiful lilac-blue blooms. Flowers are produced from June to September and hover on strong, slender stems above aromatic, silvery-grey-green foliage. Not only will the delicious scent of ‘Hidcote’ fill the air, it will also entice your local bees and butterflies, particularly our much-loved bumblebees. An enduringly popular variety which holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its dependable and delightful performance. As a Mediterranean native Lavandula is both heat and drought tolerant, matching the plant’s original climate. In addition, ‘Hidcote’ is an English Lavender which is hardy enough to withstand UK frosts, unlike some other varieties. Happy when grown in either borders or containers, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ is often used for an informal fragrant hedge and makes a wonderful addition to sensory gardens. It has even become a fashionable herb for cooking – used for both sweet and savoury dishes. Like other angustifolia lavenders, ‘Hidcote’ is a compact bushy plant which is great for cutting and makes an aromatic dried addition to pot pourri. Grows to a height of 60cm and a spread of 75cm. Prefers a site in full sun with any aspect other than north-facing. Plant in well-drained soil of any type except heavy clay. A hardy (H5), evergreen shrub.
