Flaming torches of tubular blooms, held on tall spires from July to September will set your pots, rockeries and borders on fire with their orange-red, bicoloured beauty. Kniphofia ‘Poco Sunset’ is a semi-evergreen, hardy perennial which is part of the newly developed ‘Poco’ series. Bred to be smaller than most kniphofia, this treasure grows to a height of 50cm and spreads its strap-shaped foliage up to 40cm, ideal for a patio or balcony where space is at a premium. These pollinator-friendly flowers have a touch of exoticism to them and create compact clumps of arching, architectural leaves which are held for most, if not all, of the year. Ideal for prairie planting and gravel gardens or rockeries too, plants are drought tolerant once they have established a good root structure. Kniphofia ‘Poco Sunset’ prefers a spot in well-drained, loam or sand based soil which has an acid or neutral pH. Locate in a south or west facing aspect which benefits from full sun. Keep soil moist as plants establish and these hardy (H4), semi-evergreen perennials should cope with temperatures down to -10°C without additional winter protection.
