A dazzlingly early blast of summery yellowFrom late winter to early spring, Iris danfordiae bears solitary, sweetly scented yellow flowers, each one marked lightly with tiny brown and green speckles. Originating from Turkey, bright, sunshine-coloured delights make a cheerful and eye-catching patch of colour when planted in groups. Each flower comes up 'naked', that is, before the foliage. Later they are joined by just two, simple, ridged leaves. A delicate-looking yet tough plant, certain to lift spirits on short, chilly days. Perfect for the front of a border, beneath deciduous trees, and shrubs, or packed tightly in a container for a vivid burst of colour. Iris danfordiae prefers to be in an open, sunny, well-drained site in neutral to alkaline soil. A hardy, bulbous perennial which grows to around 15cm tall, spreading to 10cm. With an RHS rating of H6, no winter protection is required over winter.
