A smaller sized variety, Hydrangea arborescens ‘Ruby Annabelle’ reaches around 1.2 metres in height and spread. Nonetheless it still offers a profusion of large flowerheads, up to 30cm wide, in shades of pink, red and cream to bedazzle and delight you and your garden visitors. Blooms emerge in July and continue for up to 3 months – adding their intense colours to borders, woodland edges and large containers. ‘Annabelle’ varieties of hydrangea are known to be well branched with a sturdy structure which is less prone to flopping. Plants can even be grown as low hedging – with leaves retained from March to November for up to nine months of screening. Stems also make a beautiful inclusion in a vase or bouquet and some colours are retained even when stems are dried. Hydrangea arborescens ‘Ruby Annabelle’ prefers moist, well-drained acidic to neutral soil of any kind except heavy clay. Position these hardy (H6) deciduous shrubs in full sun or partial shade.
