Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ will reliably flower every year, even if the winter has been very cold, or if the plant has had a harsh pruning. Large 'balls' of white flowers, often over 25cm wide are held from July through to September. These generous flowerheads start off creamy white then fade into a lime green, culminating in a delicate, papery brown and offering one the finest seed heads for your winter garden. Commonly known as Smooth Hydrangea, Hydrangea arborescens are native to North America and the roots were once used medicinally by Native Americans for treatment of kidney stones. Stems make an excellent inclusion in a vase – either fresh or dried – and plants will happily grow in large containers as well as open ground. Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ prefers to be grown in either full sun or partial shade where it benefits from moist, well-drained soil. A hardy shrub (H6), which reaches a height of and spread of up to 2.5 metres and requires no winter protection throughout most of the UK.
