The native English bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, are the quintessential sign of a British spring; when bluebells are in flower the much-anticipated season has most definitely arrived, and summer is just around the corner. Your shady woodland garden is sure to be brightened by this beautiful spring flowering bulb. Bluebells are deer and rabbit resistant, vigorous plants - ideal for creating carpets of blooms. Their classic colour will make a dramatic impact and gently fill the spring air with sweet, fruity scent. Blooms unmistakeably flower on one side of the stem, giving the iconic gracefully arching stature. Plant your Hyacinthoides non-scripta bulbs in September or October on well-drained, moist soil at a depth of 10cm. They will flower the following April to May with stems reaching up to 30cm tall, each bending at the top where several single bells of sweetly perfumed violet-blue flowers dangle softly. Plants spread to 10cm each and will naturalise easily amongst other spring bulbs in an informal woodland planting scheme.
