A cousin of the Akebia (Chocolate vine), Holboellia latifolia originates from the Himalayas and is a fast-growing climber which will cover a large wall. The dense, evergreen foliage of leathery leaves are green tinged with purple and stay all year, even near the roots of the plant, so no bare patches.Highly fragrant blooms will draw in the pollinators - the male flowers are usually greenish-white, while the female flowers are red-purple - and are borne on the same plant, in racemes from April to June. Green-purple-red, sausage-shaped fruit up to 10cm in length follow in September and October, hence the common name, broad-leaved sausage vine. The fruit is edible, the inside pulp can be eaten raw tasting a little like bitter aubergine, the rind can then stuffed and baked in foil.Happiest in a sunny spot but will tolerate partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Holboellia latifolia will reach a mature height of 4-8m and spread 2.5-4m, but does respond well to being trimmed or cut back to the desired size. A hardy perennial (H4) to around -10 C.
