A cross between heuchera and tiarella, heucherallas combine the brilliant foliage colour of the former, with the scalloped leaf shape and dark veining of the latter. These neat, compact, well-behaved plants are ideal for containers, plugging gaps in the garden, and providing attractive, semi-evergreen groundcover. They often come into their own during the cooler months when the retreat of herbaceous perennials puts their colourful display centre stage. For this collection we have brought together three of our current favourites. 'Buttered Rum' offers rich caramel tones, gradually deepening to scarlet red. 'Cracked Ice' is silvery, slate purple with hints of peachy orange in spring and autumn. Lastly, and perhaps the most eye-catching of all is 'Solar Eclipse', its rich burgundy leaves edged with a startling bright, lime green. All three bear slender stems with loose sprays of tiny flowers from spring to early summer (though 'Buttered Rum' less so than the others). For best results grow heucherella in fertile, moist, well-draining, neutral to acid soil, in partial shade (though 'Buttered Rum' and 'Cracked Ice' will also tolerate full sun). Heucherella prefers a sheltered spot and is hardy to between -15 C and -20 C. H: 25cm S: 35-45cm.
