Native to China and endangered in the wild, Heptacodium miconioides' is a rare, intriguing and unusual large specimen shrub. Related to the honeysuckle it has been reintroduced into the horticultural world following risk of extinction and is ethically propagated to preserve it for future generations. In winter, interesting, peeling bark covers the main stem and branches providing textural interest. Then in August and September clusters of beautifully scented tiny flowers, which are loved by butterflies, hang from the branches. After the blooms have fallen, the calyxes remain attached to the stems, and shift to beautiful shades of pink, red and deep plum alongside golden and red leaves for a wonderful autumnal display. Heptacodium miconioides 'Tianshan' can reach an eventual height and spread of 4m and is therefore best planted where it has plenty of space to spread. Prefers a moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. A fully hardy specimen which does not need any additional winter protection throughout the UK.
