A new and unusual arrival for 2024. Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Aubergine with White Edge’ may not have a poetic sounding name but its richly hued, decadent double blooms will have you and your visitors waxing lyrical about its impact in the garden. Perfect for a vase or a shadier spot this long-lasting bloom emerges in January and is retained right through into April, with flowers held over gap-filling and robust, evergreen palmate foliage. Helleborus orientalis traces its history back to ancient times when Greek and Romans used plants medicinally. In the Middle Ages, blooms were a popular choice for religious ceremonies due its flowering around Lent (hence the common name). In the 1960s plants underwent a surge of interest with many new varieties becoming available. Breeding continues to this day with newer and more intriguing flowers being continually developed.
