Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra 'Luna Roja' is a hardy (H6), herbaceous, perennial sunflower sure to bring rays of brilliant sunshine into your summer and early autumn garden, whatever the weather. Such an abundance of blooms is hard to ignore and will create a stunning display in pots, rockeries, herbaceous borders and as colourful swathes through the grasses of a prairie garden.
An abundance of nectar means bees and butterflies will be enticed in for a feast, and the seedheads which follow are excellent sustenance for birds and other wildlife too. Flowers also take a pretty picture in a vase – lending an explosion of colour to arrangements. The exquisite foliage is long-lasting, from April to October, with its rich, bronze, green hues bringing intensity when not in bloom.
The genus name is derived from the Greek word 'helios' meaning 'sun' and 'opsis' meaning 'appearance' - relating to their brightly coloured flowers. Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra 'Luna Roja' prefers well-drained soil of any kind and plant in a sunny spot and avoid a north facing aspect. Plants reach a mature height of 45cm, spreading to 40cm.
