The ‘Halcyon Holboellia’ duo are vigorous, evergreen climbers with a unique twist.
Boasting twining stems, the attractive foliage is tinged purple-bronze when young and matures to a rich, dark green. In April, unusual, highly scented, dangling flowers hang in tightly packed clusters until June. Unusually, the blooms appear in two different colours on the same plant, depending on whether they are male (which are usually green-white), or female (usually red-purple).
In autumn, intriguing sausage-shaped fruits are produced, hence the common name. We class the fruit as ornamental as they can apparently be eaten when cooked, but possess an unpleasant, bitter taste. Despite its unappetising nature, this sensational ‘Sausage Vine’ is sure to become a wonderful talking point.
The ‘Halcyon Holboellia’ duo, prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil, in a sunny or shady spot, where they can climb a wall, reaching a height and spread of 4-8m. Hardy shrubs, the ‘Halcyon Holboellia’ collection comprises coriacea and latifolia.
