There is no doubt that Allium amethystinum ‘Red Mohican’ is both striking and unusual – perfect for those of you seeking something a little different which will become a conversation piece in beds, borders and containers. From May to June bold, bright, wine-red, rounded flowerheads emerge on long, strong stems – growing up to 1 metre tall. Drumstick shaped spheres of multiple blooms are topped by a spiky, elongated tuft of flowers which resembles a mohawk haircut – hence the name! Alliums are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators and will look wonderful planted in drifts next to ornamental grasses as well as being ideal for the mid to rear of a border where the bobbing heads of the flowers will gently sway in the breeze. The blooms of Allium amethystinum ‘Red Mohican’ also look incredible in a vase and will last up to 2 weeks for extended interest inside your home.
