About Hosta

Hosta are clump forming, herbaceous perennial plants that are renowned for their resilience. They are easy to grow and are available in a wide range of foliage colour, sizes and shapes. Glossy, ovate or lance-shaped foliage will brighten up dark areas with often variegated patterns. They are also popular for their flowers that often release a sweet yet subtle fragrance. They are best suited to flower beds and borders or used as underplanting beneath roses and shrubs within coastal, cottage or informal garden settings. You should expect to see Hosta grow to a height of between 50-90cm (20-35”) and a spread of 20cm-1.5m (8”-5’).

How to plant Hosta

Hosta are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam and clay within an acidic, neutral and alkaline PH balance. Where shade is absent, incorporate a generous amount of organic matter such as compost or leaf mould as this will retain moisture in the soil. Ideally, you should choose a site that attracts the right amount of shade, protected from adverse weather conditions and full sunlight. Dig a hole that is deep and wide enough to accommodate your plant and water thoroughly to settle the soil into place.

How to care for Hosta

You can expect to see the foliage die away during winter which you can remove and discard. Flower stalks can be detached once the flowering period is over, as this will neaten up the overall appearance of your plant. Hosta require moist soil so ensure that you water your plants regularly, especially during periods of drought. You should mulch Hosta with organic matter to help retain moisture, whilst suppressing weeds alongside adding vital nutrition to the soil.

How to propagate Hosta

It is possible to propagate Hosta by division during late summer or early spring.
