Also known as Dusky Cranesbill, Geranium phaeum adds intense, darker colour to most areas of the garden. From late spring into summer, an abundance of blooms emerge, each with petals in shades of red-maroon-purple. Flowers are held in loose clusters on wiry stems so the blooms almost appear to hover above mounds of attractive, lush green, weed-suppressing groundcover. Flowers are a draw for pollinators too, who will come to feast on the sweet nectar.Geranium phaeum is deer and slug resistant, making it a valuable, and reliable, inclusion in the garden. Commonly known as Cranesbill, because of the shape of the seedheads once the petals have fallen, looking like the bird's beak.
