Make a bold statement in your spring garden with the showy, downward-facing golden blooms of Fritillaria imperialis maxima Lutea.Clusters of bright yellow flowers atop towering stems reaching 90cm in height bloom from April to June, topped by a crown-like tuft of leaves, hence the name. According to legend, as Jesus was on his way to be crucified, all flowers bent their heads except for the proud Crown Imperial. God reprimanded the plant, and it has bowed its head ever since. Loved by bees and deer resistant, the plants have a faint musky odour, which is known to keep moles, mice, and other rodents away. Plant the strange-looking bulbs 10cm deep in autumn and allow space for the plants, which will reach a spread of 30cm each to naturalise. Crown Imperials prefer well-drained soil in sun or part shade in a sheltered area.Planted in drifts near the back of a border, or in a statement pot with other spring bulbs, Fritillaria imperialis maxima Lutea will provide a stunning show of late spring zing.
