Flavoursome old timers
Strawberry varieties grown for modern, commercial purposes tend to be chosen for their large yields and storage capabilities; flavour being low down on the list of criteria. As a result, most of the old favourites have sadly disappeared from our shelves, along with their exquisite taste. Thankfully, generations of home-growers have kept many of these going, such as the three in our Fragaria Heritage Collection.
‘Royal Sovereign’ is widely considered to produce the best flavoured strawberries of all time. Introduced in 1892 it was hugely popular until the 1960s, even served at the coronation banquet of Queen Elizabeth II. It requires a little more TLC than newer alternatives, however we think you’ll agree the rewards are worth it.
‘Pegasus’ is an award-winning favourite which bridges the gap between mid and late season varieties. Its flesh is a soft, pinkish red, with a mild, sweet flavour. Easy and reliable.
