Perennial salvias are a must for summer borders and containers. They offer a huge spectrum of colours, extraordinarily long flowering periods, and a rich source of nectar for pollinators. Their delicate flowers mix easily with a huge range of other plants, from dahlias in an exotic border to roses and lavender in a cottage scheme. This collection offers three of the best for a profusion of upright, colourful spires: 'Amistad' is an award-winning favourite with rich purple flowers and dramatic near-black stems and calyces. Blooms May to October. H: 1.2m S: 50cm. 'Love and Wishes' is a pink form with chocolate-brown buds. Also blooms May to October. H:80cm S: 50cm.'Phyllis' Fancy' is largest of the three; its downy white flowers held in bright violet calyces. Blooms June to November. H: 2m S: 1m. For best results grow in a sunny spot in moist, well-draining, moderately fertile soil. These are hardy to between 1 C and -5 C, so will need protection during a cold winter. This can take the form of fleece or a dry mulch, as well as stems left intact over winter (cut back once new growth emerges in spring). Alternatively, take cuttings to ensure plants for the following year.
