Tell Me More...
Eriophorum scheuchzeri is an elaborate name for a very simple yet attractive plant, also known as 'White Cottongrass', which is the perfect description. Native to Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Iceland this is a fully hardy member of the Sedge family and grows to a height of up to 30cm, with a spread of 30-40cm. A semi-evergreen perennial which needs to be kept moist and will grow as an aquatic plant by riverbanks, ponds, wet meadows, or in standing water. The native Inuit peoples of Northern Canada have a wonderful name for Eriophorum scheuchzeri, they call it 'Imitation Mittens'.Fluffy, white flowerheads are borne from June-September each year and held aloft above the green foliage on slender stems. The flowers can be picked and dried for stunning arrangements, or freshly cut, lasting well in a vase. Eriophorum Scheuchzeri can be propagated from seed in autumn or by division of the root ball in spring, and will thrive in full sun or part shade.
