Tell Me More...
A native European hardy orchid, Epipactis palustris is found in humid woodland and grassland, or marshes. In spring, strong stems grow to around 30cm tall, each with up to 10 pointed leaves around the base and between the blooms. From June to August, clusters of open-mouthed blooms dangle, showing off their pale pink-white petals. One of the prettiest of the family, it is known commonly as the Marsh helleborine. A strong, tolerant, herbaceous perennial, fleshy horizontal rhizomes are formed beneath the soil which creep and spread to a lush clump over time – new shoots are produced in spring. Epipactis palustris is hardy to around -20°C, so winter protection will not be required. Preferring to be grown in partial shade in moist, cool soil, even pond edges, where it will reach a mature height of 30cm, and spread to around 30-45cm.
